Karla’s mouth gaped as she paced in front of Morgan’s desk. “If you don’t know a thing about golf, why in the world would you suggest a golf outing?”

“But I didn’t. I never mentioned golf. Chandler did. I suggested we have a bowl-a-thon. My brothers love bowling, and I thought—”

“A bowl-a-thon? In Boston? The money comes from the town’s rich and famous, not Wannabee Sam and Suzie Nobody.”

Morgan’s jaw drooped. “It makes no difference, anyway. I don’t bowl, either.” How could she admit she knew nothing about golf? As far as everyone knew the golf outing was her creation. “What can I do? I could get sick at the last minute, I suppose.”

“Get sick? Chandler wouldn’t excuse you if you were in traction.” Frustration contorted her usually pleasant face. “You’ll learn how to play golf.”

“I will?”

“You will . . . or else.” She leaned over Morgan’s desk like an angry teacher.

“Or else what?” She panicked. Learn to play in less than a month?

“Or else you’ll look like a fool. Is that what you want?” Karla jerked her hands above her head.

“I am a fool, but why would I want to look like one?” The golf panic set in since Anica arrived three weeks earlier. Rumor had it Anica was an excellent golfer. “Karla, I can’t look like a fool in front of Anica. Or Hunter.”

“Hang on.” Karla rested her hand on Morgan’s shoulder. “Let me talk to a friend of mine. He’s a great golfer, and he’ll know a good professional golf instructor.”

“Do they have Golf for Dummies?”

The tension of the moment washed away with Karla’s burst of laughter. “I think there is, but first let me talk to him.”

Morgan stared across the room weighted with discomfort. “I wonder whose team I’ll be on?”

Karla’s laugh brought her to attention.

“What’s so funny?”

“No team. It’s a foursome.”

“Okay. Foursome. So I’ll work on terminology, too.” A grin tugged at her cheek. “I sure can’t play with Anica. But depending on how the lessons go, I’d give a gold-plated putter to be on Hunter’s tea . . . in his foursome.” She shrugged. “Since last month, when we came back from Providence, I can’t forget that night. Horrible, but special.” Panic rattled her again. “I don’t make one iota of sense, do I?” She didn’t bother to look at Karla. She already knew what expression she would see. “Then I have to watch Anica’s flitting around Hunter. The cad.”

“My, my! I remember hearing you say, ‘I’m not going to chase Hunter.’ ”

“I lied.”

Karla shook her head. “I don’t know what to tell you, Morgan. I’ll see if I can find out who the foursomes are. Chandler’s making up the groups, right? I’ll check with our secret agent.”

“You’re a pal, Karla. I owe you one.”

“One? Before we’re done, my dear, you’ll owe me plenty.” With a wave of her hand, Karla dashed out the door.

Running into Hunter was inevitable. Seeing him at the Monday staff meetings or passing in the hallway was different from talking in private.
